Market Events
The Market Events feature gives you a feed of trade-related and maritime developments that may affect Japanese equities. Events are collected from authoritative public sources and displayed on the Dashboard so you can stay informed about macro-level risks alongside company-level fundamentals.
Where to find market events
Section titled “Where to find market events”The Dashboard includes a Market Events section showing recent events sorted by recency and severity. Each event card shows:
- A short title and summary
- The type of event (maritime or trade controls)
- A severity indicator (Low, Medium, High, or Critical)
- The region or area affected
- The date the event was published
Types of events
Section titled “Types of events”Kabuken tracks three categories of market events:
Maritime and logistics disruptions Alerts about navigational hazards, shipping route disruptions, and related developments in key global waterways. These events are relevant for companies with significant import/export activity or exposure to international shipping.
Trade and export controls Updates when companies or entities are added to trade restriction lists by major regulatory authorities such as the US Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS). This is relevant for sectors such as semiconductors, industrial equipment, and advanced materials.
Each BIS entity-list entry is tagged with its origin country (China, Russia, Iran, etc.), so you can see which sanctioned-country supply chains are most active. The Events filter shows a country breakdown such as “China: 2,847 / Russia: 412 / Iran: 203 / Other: 89” — these numbers represent entity-list rows by sanctioned country of origin, letting portfolio owners filter by specific exposure.
Petroleum supply (Japan) Supply change data from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) covering Japan-side petroleum import and refinery volumes. Events in this feed have bilingual titles (Japanese and English). Severity reflects the week-over-week supply change: a significant drop triggers a Medium or High event; routine fluctuations are dropped by the smart filter and not shown.
Severity levels
Section titled “Severity levels”| Level | What it means |
|---|---|
| Critical | A major disruption with likely near-term impact on supply chains, trade flows, or specific sectors |
| High | A significant development in a relevant region or sector requiring attention |
| Medium | A notable event that is worth monitoring but has limited immediate impact |
| Low | A minor or routine notice with low direct relevance to most investors |
Low-severity petroleum events are dropped by the smart filter before storage and do not appear in the feed.
MARAD maritime stress trend
Section titled “MARAD maritime stress trend”For maritime advisories (MARAD source), the Events page shows a small sparkline per region zone. Each sparkline covers the past 12 weeks and shows the severity-weighted advisory count for that region. Severity weights used in the trend calculation are:
| Severity | Weight |
|---|---|
| LOW | 8 |
| MEDIUM | 28 |
| HIGH | 35 |
| CRITICAL | 45 |
A rising sparkline means more or more-severe advisories are being issued for that region. This is a leading indicator for shipping-sector and energy-sector companies with exposure to that route.
BIS country segmentation
Section titled “BIS country segmentation”BIS entity-list entries are categorized by the origin country of the sanctioned entity. The country-to-sector mapping used internally is:
| Country | Affected sectors |
|---|---|
| China, Hong Kong | Semiconductors, Electronics, Precision instruments, Shipping |
| Russia | Energy, Steel, Chemicals, Defense-adjacent |
| Iran | Energy, Petrochemicals, Shipping |
| North Korea | Defense-adjacent, Semiconductors |
| Belarus, Syria | Defense-adjacent |
| Others | Defense-adjacent (fallback) |
When a new BIS entry is added, the system looks up the entity’s country and applies the matching sector tags to the event. This means sector-filtered views in the Events page (e.g., filtering to SEMICONDUCTORS) will surface China- and North Korea-origin BIS entries automatically.
How events relate to company analysis
Section titled “How events relate to company analysis”Market events provide macro context that complements the company-level financial data on Kabuken. Consider events alongside the risk signals on the company Overview tab:
- A maritime disruption may affect companies with heavy reliance on a particular shipping route
- A trade control update is directly relevant to companies in sectors like semiconductors or advanced manufacturing
- Trade tensions or regional disruptions may increase FX volatility for companies with significant overseas revenue
- A METI petroleum event is relevant for energy-sector companies (refining, petrochemicals, utilities) and energy-intensive manufacturers
The risk context widget on company pages (see Risk Context) reflects industry-level exposure to these categories of risk.
Language support
Section titled “Language support”Event titles are available in both Japanese and English. MARAD maritime advisory titles use a structured bilingual template: {region_ja}:{severity_ja}レベルの海事警報 in Japanese and a corresponding English title. METI petroleum events use bilingual titles derived from the official METI publication. The platform displays events in your selected language.
